1959 Cadillac Sedan: Video #35 -- Steering leak, idling high and contemplating the future
So here's an odd video: I'm happy because a couple of nagging issues with the Caddy, a steering fluid leak and a low idle, have finally been resolved. The car is purring like a happy kitten and ready for some late summer/fall cruising.
But... as I approach nine years of ownership of this car, the truth is my joy in owning it has been outweighed by the seemingly never-ending problems and fixes I encounter. As soon as one thing's done and I'm leaking forward to some clear sailing/cruising, something else crops up. So asking the unaskable question: is it time to think about letting the Cadillac go?

1959 Cadillac Sedan: Video #34 -- Wash & chrome polishing
Переглядів 34414 днів тому
Finally got a chance to give the '59 Caddy a good wash after sitting dirty for too long. The boys are big enough to help out with chores, and it really makes things go faster. Also had to address the chrome, especially on the bumpers, that has gotten pretty oxidized. I'll show you my trick for cleaning up original chrome quite well. You'll never get rid of pitting but can make that nasty rusty ...

I thought the electrical issue was licked, and was looking forward to some cruising in the '51 Ford truck. Unfortunately, it rained on and off for a whole week so it sat under its cover, waiting for Saturday night. I was excited to stab that key in and go but... it's obviously losing juice somewhere. New battery, alternator tested and is fine... any ideas?
1951 Ford F1: Video #29 -- The alternator mystery
Переглядів 1,2 тис.28 днів тому
After a full engine rebuild, whole new wiring harness and a bunch more work, I was not too happy when the truck suddenly didn't want to crank over. The battery tested low but not dead, and the AAA guy tested the alternator and found no juice was coming out! This was actually the third alternator I've had in the truck in two years. After it was taken off and tested fine, the mystery only deepene...
1959 Cadillac Sedan: Video #33 -- Painting interior trim
Переглядів 125Місяць тому
The Caddy has been a little neglected while dealing with truck and other life stuff, but it's time to work some more on the interior. There are several bits of trip that need to be painted, including the C-pillar caps, driving while spoke and underdash. These are little bits 'n' pieces I've been meaning to get to and finally did! It's satisfying to finally be able to cross these off the list.

    Change the pulley on the alternator to a smaller one.

  • @mschiffel1
    @mschiffel1 19 днів тому

    The alternator needs a full 12Volts to "excite" the charging. If the battery is marginal you'll have a problem. A generator will fully charge a dead battery but an alternator will not charge a dead battery.

      Battery is brand new, installed last week. It sat for a week and then when I went to start it, dead. So it's somehow losing juice just sitting.

  • @sawymer
    @sawymer 23 дні тому

    After the engine warms up, let it idle. Then have someone read the dc voltage on the battery as the engine runs. The dc voltage should read 13.5 to 14.5 vdc. If it reads 12.5, the alternator is not charging. If 12.5, slowly increase engine rpm until you see at least 13.5vdc. This is the minimum rpm for the alternator to function. Once you have 13.5, turn on your headlights, interior fan and any other dc load and recheck the voltage. If the 13.5 vdc is maintained, adjust the carb idle screw to maintain that rpm.

    I think you missunderstood what the forums were saying. Single wire alternators may have to be brought up to over 1000 rpm to excite the field. Once the field is excited, it will charge at lower rpms. You need to put a voltmeter across the battery to verify if the alternator is charging. You should see about 13 volts or higher at idle. Right now you seem to be using the parts cannon to resolve your problem. You may even have a current draw when the vehicle is turned off. That will keep the battery in a low state of charge. Time will tell if the battery was the problem.

I noticed that the doors do not completely dismantle, to get to the window/mechanisms. Do you know how we can replace the window felts. I will include a photo below. Hopefully we did not go too far in our clean up attempt🤷‍♀️ Ooops can’t add photos. Can we text/email to share communication (if you can help us)

    Wrong, the advantage of alternators is that they charge at low RPM. An alternator will put out a fourth to a third of its amperage at 700 RPM (idle).

    Depending on the engine crank pulley sizing, that SHOULD charge at about 1000 rpm engine speed at idle. . If not, change the alternator pulley. Or you have another electrical issue. They do make special geared alternators for generator/alternator conversion for older cars, but they are expensive. Changing to a smaller pulley on the alternator generally works

A piece of plywood covered the trashed bed. Almost always started out in 2nd, 1st gear would have been great for pulling things. All the luck in the world with yours.
